The Metcalfe County community is mourning after a heartbreaking incident that occurred on the morning of Wednesday, January 14, at a residence on Shady Grove Wickerville Road in Hardyville. Kentucky State Police responded to the scene following a call that led them to a tragic discovery involving a longtime local couple.

When troopers arrived at the residence, they found 83-year-old Doris June Huffman deceased inside the home. Authorities determined that she had suffered an apparent gunshot wound and she was pronounced dead at the scene by the Metcalfe County coroner. The sudden and violent nature of her passing has left family 

members, neighbors, and friends in deep shock and sorrow.During their investigation, officers also located Doris’s husband, 87-year-old Vander Huffman, inside the residence. He was found suffering from life-threatening injuries believed to be self-inflicted. Emergency responders quickly transported him to T.J. 

Samson Hospital, where medical staff worked to save his life. Despite their efforts, Vander Huffman later succumbed to his injuries, adding to the profound sadness surrounding the incident.The Huffmans were known in the community as longtime residents, and news of their deaths has deeply affected those who knew them. 

Neighbors have described the couple as quiet and familiar faces in the area, making the tragedy all the more difficult to comprehend. In the wake of the incident, many community members have expressed their condolences and support for the family during this painful time.

Kentucky State Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. While the investigation remains ongoing, authorities have stated that there is no threat to the public. As Metcalfe County grieves, residents are being reminded of the importance of compassion, mental health awareness, and checking in on loved ones, especially during difficult seasons of life.
